Post Cremation Services
What Our Dharma states: The antyeshthi stands for all the post-death rites performed by the putran (son) of the deceased for his future welfare and to be freed from the debt or obligation he owes to his parents.
Post-cremation ceremonies are elaborate rites lasting (10+2+1) 13 days. These ceremonies are performed by the family's principal mourner (Kartha) and conducted by the family priest. As soon as the Atman (Self) leaves the body, it adopts another intangible subtle body.
On the tenth day after death, this subtle body is ready to travel to Pitru Loka (ancestral plane). The Kartha offers the pindas – (balls, made from cooked rice) – and Tarpana (libations) for the wellbeing of, and to express love and gratitude for his relationship with the deceased.
On the 11th day preparatory rites are performed for 12th day ceremony.
On the 12th day, the Atman (self) departs for the pitruloka – and a ceremony is performed marking this unification called Sapindikaranam (a pinda is laid representing the subtle body adjoining ancestral pindas that is merged with) completes the process.
On the thirteenth day, the end of the mourning period is marked with purificatory rites performed with a small homam (contained Fire oblation).
